The Earth’s Heartbeat: The Schumann Resonance

The Earth’s Heartbeat: The Schumann Resonance

Dream CPR 6 continues its exploration into alternate tunings, and this time, my curiosity led me to the Earth itself. After diving into the fascinating world of 432 Hz, I couldn’t help but wonder: does our planet have a resonating frequency? And if so, could it be turned into music?

What’s Mother Earth’s Resonant Frequency?

The Earth’s natural electromagnetic vibrations occur at 7.83 Hz!

A phenomenon known as the Schumann Resonance.

Did I put you to sleep?

Ok…. let’s make it fun

To put this in perspective, imagine your tiny ears compared to the size of the Earth. Now, many of us saw Marty McFly blast into a wall in “Back to the Future” from speakers barely larger than him. Now, imagine an instrument the size of the earth making a sound. Would our ears be capable of picking up the notes and dancing along? Sadly, no.

As a composer constantly experimenting for Dream CPR, I thought it would be fun to build a tuning system around this tone. But: neither 440 Hz nor 432 Hz aligns harmonically with a system where B-2 equals 7.83 Hz.

**Science/snore Alert: Why Can’t We Hear It?**

The Schumann Resonance is more than just a frequency, it’s a reflection of the Earth’s electromagnetic activity. Scientists have found (wake up) that these ultra-low frequencies can

influence brainwave activity, particularly in states of relaxation and meditation (NASA, 2020). However, because it’s far below the human hearing range (20–20,000 Hz), we don’t experience it as sound. Instead we feel it more like a subtle energetic presence that we’re always aware of and would miss if it stopped.

Imagine dancing and singing along to a favorite that everyone loves to sing along to. You’re belting out the chorus, and the drummer and guitarist stop playing during the best part. In this instance it is a sound that you weren’t really thinking about but felt. You heard it but were concentrating on having fun singing but when half the band cuts out unexpectedly it immediately becomes your primary focus.

If the data is accurate on the Earth’s sound, it would become our primary focus.

If we feel that frequency as part of our environment and home, then that is the comforting heartbeat sound of our mother Earth.

we can’t hear it directly, its effects might still be felt on an unconscious level.

Does This Matter?

Not really. While the idea of being “in tune” with the Earth sounds mystical and appealing, it has no practical application in our daily lives. The Earth’s resonating frequencies are so slow and massive that no man-made tuning system can truly align with them.

Here’s what does matter: humans have been playing music on this planet for centuries. We’ve discovered tones, built systems to organize notes, and felt deep emotional connections to music. Whether tuned to 440 Hz, 432 Hz, or any other standard, music makes us feel. Music connects us to ourselves and each other, regardless of whether it aligns with planetary frequencies.

Will Dream CPR release recordings featuring this frequency?

No.

Historical Perspective

Since ancient times, humans have been singing, dancing, and playing music on this same planet without worrying about whether their instruments were “in tune” with the Earth. During Giuseppe Verdi’s era (1813–1901), instruments were often tuned to 432 Hz, a practice now referred to as “Verdi’s A.” This tuning resonated beautifully with instruments built at the time but eventually shifted to 440 Hz as louder instruments became necessary for larger concert halls (Smithsonian Magazine, 2017).

The truth is, music has always existed within the natural rhythms of our world. Whether tuned to ancient systems or modern standards, what matters most is how it makes us feel, not whether it aligns with cosmic vibrations.

Faith in Sound

While there’s no magical frequency that works for everyone, If someone believes a certain frequency (or song) helps them relax or heal, they’re likely to feel better simply because they believe it will (Harvard Health Publishing, 2022). This article points to a placebo effect but how do we know the frequency/ies didn’t honestly help them?

Trust Yourself

But here’s the good news: your body knows what works for you. Music is deeply personal. it’s energy, art, communication, and even a time machine. It conveys emotions we don’t yet have words for. If one composer’s intent doesn’t resonate with you but another sound does, embrace it! You might love music in an obscure key that others don’t enjoy and that’s awesome! That uniqueness is why we have so many options to choose from.

Your Turn

What do you think about the Earth’s “Heartbeat”? Do you think we’re aware of it? How would we know without spending time on another planet? Share your thoughts, I’d love to hear them.
